What is a Magnetism?

Scientist know a lot about the properties of magnets, like what they are made of, what they will attract.  They can make many things using magnets like electricity and computers.  But believe it or not scientist really don't know what magnetism is except that it is a force that attracts certain types of metals.
Try some Magnet experiments

1. Get some magnets from your teacher.
2. Make a list of everything in the classroom that the magnets wil stick to.
3. Take two magnets and watch what happens as you try to stick them together.
4. Flip the magnets around and what happens now.
5. Write down what happens.
6. Place one magnet on top of your desk, and hold the other on underneath your desk.  Try to make the one on top move.  Why do you think it does this?

Write five things you learned about magnets while playing with them.

Magnet Facts:

Hopefully you learned something about types of metals magnets attract.

You should have discovered something about magnetic poles also.  All magnets have a north and a south pole.  Magnets are strongest at their poles.

When two like poles are together the magnets will repel or push apart.

When two opposite poles are together the magnets will
attract
or come together.
The area around the magnets poles is called the magnetic field.  That means magnetic objects within this field will be attacted to  the magnet.  The magnetic field is strongest near the poles.
A compass is a magnet which can align itself within the earth's magnetic field.

A compass is simply a thin magnet or magnetized iron needle balanced on a pivot. The needle will rotate to point toward the opposite pole of a magnet.
