Our Earth is constantly changing.  Forces deep inside the earth can mold and shape the surface.  Complete the activities below  to learn move about these forces.  You will be creating a power point called "Our changing Earth".

Lesson 1 - Our Earth

In this activity we will learn about the layers of the earth.  Use the sites below to find facts about the 4 layers of the earth.  Make a power point slide for each of the layers,  write 3 facts out each layer of the earth.

Lesson  2 - The Earth's Crust

The earth is completely covered by a thin, rocky outer layers call the crust.  There are two types of crust: continental crust and oceanic crust.  Write a power point slide to add to the ones you already made.  One should be about the continental crust and the other about the oceanic crust.  Then about the thickness of each crust and some ot the geographic features in each crust.  use the following word on your pages:
mid-ocean ridge, ocean floor, trench, continent and island.

Lesson 3 - Fossils

Fossils give u s clues to the past.  They tell us information about what animals lived long ago, where these animals lived, what the earth was like and how old rocks are.  They cane even tell us how the earth's continents have moved.
Create 3 power point slide to add to the ones above.  They should be called:
Fossils - tell about what a fossil is, and where to find them.
How Fossils are Made - Tell about how fossils are formed.
What Fossils Tell Us - Tell about information we learn from studying fossils

Lesson 4 - Continental Drift and Plate Tectonics

Fossils of different animals are found on continents fart apart.  fossils of animals that live in warm climates have been found in cold places like Antarctica.  These are clues that the continents may  have moved over time.  Some scientist suggested that the continents were once connected in one giant continent called Pnagaea and are slowly drifting over the liquid mantle like a boat on the ocean.    Others say the earth is divided into plates that move about and collide into each other.  Study the ideas at the following sites, then add a page to your power point  about pangaea  and  continental drift.  Be sure to include reasons why these ideas seem to be true like convection currents.

Lesson 5  - Effects of Plate Movements

Plates move in 3 ways.  They move apart, together or slide pass each other.  These can result in different formations.  Explain what each of the following are and how they are formed.

Lesson 6 Volcanoes

A volcano is a mountain like structure  formed when hot, melted rock erupts on the surface of the Earth.  Volcanoes have distinct parts and there are different parts of volcanoes. Read LUCY LAVA'S Story about volcanoes.   Add the following  slides to your power point.

Lesson 7 - Earthquakes

Earthquakes occur where there is a crack in the earth's crust.  These cracks are called faults.  When an earthquake occurs near the ocean they often cause giant waves called a tsunami.  Write  on last page in your power point about earthquakes.  Be sure to tell about faults , tsunamis and how earthquakes change the earth.
